GE Announces Launch Marine Program for LM2500+G4 Gas Turbine Ideal for Commercial And Military Marine Applications
--EVENDALE, Ohio - GE - Marine today announced the launch program for the newest addition to its land and marine (LM) gas turbine product line, the LM2500+G4 gas turbine. The LM2500+G4 represents the fourth generation of GE's popular LM2500 family of aeroderivative gas turbine technology.
The launch marine program for this new engine is with the Italian and French Navies, whereby the LM2500+G4 will power the next-generation European Frigates (FREMM). The LM2500+G4 gas turbines for FREMM will be the basis of the propulsion module supplied by Avio, Torino, Italy. Avio, a long-term strategic partner of GE and a GE Marine Systems Supplier, is the prime contractor for the FREMM program.
"We are extremely delighted to be part of this cooperative effort between the French and Italian navies, with both countries continuing to embrace GE's most advanced gas turbine technology through the selection of the LM2500+G4 for FREMM," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE - Marine in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The LM2500+G4 is the latest version in GE's LM2500 gas turbine family, used by 30 navies worldwide. The LM2500+G4 is rated to provide a 17% increase in power over its LM2500+ predecessor at ISO conditions. Currently the Italian Navy has 52 LM2500 gas turbines in service or slated for operation aboard several frigate classes, two aircraft carriers and one destroyer class. The French Navy will place LM2500 gas turbines into service aboard two Horizon frigates in 2007.
Globally, there are 28 LM2500+ gas turbines operating or slated for service aboard commercial fast ferries and cruise ships, as well as 183 operating or slated for service in industrial power generation applications. The LM2500+ was initially developed and certified for commercial service within the oil, gas and industrial power generation markets. Total field experience of the LM2500+ currently exceeds 2,000,000 hours.
According to Matson, "The FREMM program is a milestone project for GE as it marks the first marine order for the LM2500+G4. The United States Navy will use the LM2500+ in its first military application on its eighth LHD and follow-on ships in the WASP (LHD) class of multipurpose amphibious assault ships. The LM2500+ was recently certified and shock tested by the U.S. Navy for mechanical drive applications. We anticipate the U.S. Navy and many other navies worldwide to find significant value in the LM2500+G4 engine for many decades to come."
GE - Marine is one of the world's leading manufacturers of marine products and services, including gas turbines ranging from 6,000 to 57,300 shaft horsepower, and marine main reduction gearing.
