GE T700 Powers Israeli Helicopter in Re-Engining Program
--FARNBOROUGH - Israeli Aircraft Industries/MATA Division, Ltd. (IAI/MATA) and GE Aircraft Engines have signed an agreement calling for IAI/MATA and GE to demonstrate the technical advantages of re-engining the Israeli Air Force's (IAF) existing Cobra AH-1S helicopters with a version of the T700-701C engine.

The T700-701C will give the Cobra greater lift capability and the ability to carry additional armament. The fuel-efficient engine also provides the aircraft with greater mission range.

Louis A. Bevilacqua, GE T700 project general manager, and Ofer Shifris, IAI/MATA division general manager, agree that the re-engining program will provide distinct advantages for the IAF. Shifris said, "The significantly lower maintenance cost of the T700, combined with its lower fuel burn, will provide important life cycle cost savings to the IAF."

Under the agreement, IAI/MATA will modify an existing IAF Cobra. GE will modify an existing IAF T700-701C engine by adapting the control system and changing the accessory gearbox to permit use of a starter-generator for compatibility with the AH-1S. IAI/MATA will conduct initial flight testing, followed by additional testing by the IAF. GEAE will supply engineering and technical support for the program.
