Model F118

Reconnaissance Engine

ReconnaissanceAfter 50 years of successful operation in some of the world's most austere locations, the U-2 still retains its rightful role as the backbone of the USAF reconnaissance fleet - thanks to continuous upgrades of its sophisticated sensor systems and a new GE F118-101 engine designed to extend its service life well into the 21st century.

The modern technology of the F118 and similiarity to GE engines used extensively in today's USAF inventory combine to provide a cost-effective, easily-maintainable upgrade to the U-2 - with significant performance advantages.

With more thrust than the earlier engine it replaces, the 17,000 pound-rated F118 powerplant offers several significant advantages, including:

- 1,200 nautical mile increase in mission range
- Longer endurance
- 30% engine weight reduction
- 3,500-foot elevation of the U-2's full service ceiling - putting it essentially out-of-reach of today's most modern interceptors and sophisticated surface missiles

Technical improvements that make these achievements possible include an improved hot-section design, which extends the interval between overhauls and translates to added operational utilization and lower life-cycle costs.

Since its initial deployment in October 1994, the F118-101 has enjoyed a rapid build-up of flying hours characterized by "mature" engine reliability and unrestricted throttle operation in all flight regimes.

With the F118-101 engine, the U-2 continues to play an important role in meeting demands for added capability and versatility around the world.
