GE CF34-8 Growth Engines Certified by the FAA

April 17, 2002

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Type Certificates to GE Aircraft Engines (GEAE) for CF34-8 Growth jet engines for three aircraft applications.

"This is a terrific achievement for the CF34-8 Growth program," said David Joyce, general manager of GEAE's Small Commercial Engine Programs. "We are proud to add the -8 Growth models to the CF34 product line. Special thanks to the specialists, partners, and suppliers for their incredible demonstration of technical excellence, teamwork, and dedication."

The CF34-8 Growth engine certification program included the completion of 19 major engine tests at three sites: GEAE's facilities at Peebles, Ohio, and Lynn, Massachusetts, as well as at Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) of Japan. IHI is a revenue-sharing participant in the CF34-8 Growth program. In addition, more than 25 component and rig tests were completed at locations worldwide.

The CF34-8 Growth engines, capable of producing maximum takeoff thrust of 14,510 pounds, are designed to power twin-engine airliners scheduled to enter revenue service over the next two years: the CF34-8C5 for the 86-passenger Bombardier CRJ900, the CF34-8D for the 70+-passenger Fairchild Dornier 728, and the CF34-8E for the 70+-passenger EMBRAER 170/175. All three engine models are derivatives of the CF34-8C1, which entered service in early 2001 and now powers CRJ700 aircraft of six airlines.

The CF34-8C5 began flight-testing on the Bombardier CRJ900 in 2001. The CF34-8E is currently undergoing flight tests on the EMBRAER 170 aircraft. The CF34-8D is now installed on Fairchild Dornier's 728 aircraft.

The CF34-8 Growth program is one example of GE's considerable commitment to and confidence in the regional jet market. Total firm orders for the entire series of CF34-8 Growth engines currently exceeds 230, and options exceed 340.
