US Airways CF6-80C2 Logs 30,000 Hours On Wing Without Removal

March 17, 1998

EVENDALE, Ohio - A CF6-80C2 engine in service with US Airways has logged 30,015 flight hours on wing without a single removal, beating the previous CF6 record of 28,888 hours set in 1996.

The engine, serial number 695379, entered service on a US Airways Boeing 767-200ER in November 1990. During the past eight years, the engine has maintained outstanding in-service reliability, with no in-flight shutdowns, excellent fuel burn and exhaust gas temperature margins, and a 99.88 percent dispatch reliability rate. The engine is scheduled for a convenience removal later this month. The other CF6-80C2 engine delivered on this aircraft in 1990 (SN#695380) logged 28,747 hours and 6,005 cycles without a shop visit until it was removed last November-another impressive record.

US Airways, which is based in Arlington, Virginia, operates a fleet of 12 CF6-80C2-powered B767-200ER aircraft. The airline operates the 54,300-pound thrust engine on its Transatlantic routes, with an average daily utilization of more than 11 hours. This outstanding level of reliability on long-range, over-water routes is testament to the long on-wing life capability of these engines.

"We're very proud of the outstanding reliability record the CF6-80C2 has achieved in revenue service. Each year, the CF6 family continues to demonstrate improvements in fleet reliability" said Roger Seager, general manager of CF6 engine programs. "However, we have to give the credit to US Airways and its maintenance team for this achievement. They have done just an outstanding job maintaining this fleet."
