LE BOURGET, France -- Qantas and GE Aviation have announced plans to develop a new module for FlightPulse™, a digital application to improve safety and operational decision making for airline pilots.
This follows the launch of the FlightPulse™ app in 2017, a flight analytics tool which uses recorded aircraft data to enable pilots to securely access their individual operational efficiency metrics and trends after each flight, helping to reduce significant amounts of fuel as well as carbon emissions.
The new module will provide rich historical data for pilots to identify any safety-related or general traffic flow considerations, and help minimise fuel burn, at specific airports or runways. Pilots will be able to access the data before each flight to help with their decision making.
The app is currently in the design phase and GE has been working closely with Qantas pilots to understand their needs.
Qantas Group Executive, Associated Airlines and Services, John Gissing, said the collaboration was a further evolution of how pilots can use data to drive efficiencies.
"More than 2,400 Qantas pilots use FlightPulse since we launched last year, so we know the value of putting data in the hands of pilots - the people with the power to change. This new module of the app is a natural next step to drive even more efficiencies in the way we operate," said Mr Gissing.
"Together with GE Aviation, we want to revolutionise the way the aviation industry uses flight data, so it makes sense to pursue new opportunities to get more flight data to crews well before they get to the flight deck."
Chief Digital Officer for GE Aviation, John Mansfield, said the new module has the potential to change the way the industry uses flight data.
"This collaboration is all about empowering the aviation industry with a software tool kit to share the collective wealth of experience across the operation and generate insights, which typically have been difficult to gain," he said.
"We want to help our customers understand what's possible in terms of flight data analytics and how to get value in the data that they previously might not have even known existed.
"When we combine the knowledge of our teams, it allows us to unlock benefits across a wide range of areas like fuel, safety, operations and training."
A prototype of the app will be available as part of GE Aviation's chalet at the 53rd. International Paris Airshow. The app will be available in early 2020. View the FlightPulse video here.
