GE90 Engines Reach 20 Million Flight-Hours Mark

FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW -- The world's most powerful jet engine, the GE90, has accumulated 20 million flight-hours since it entered service in 1995. 

"The GE90-powered Boeing 777 has proven to be one of the most popular big twin-engine aircraft," said Tony Aiello, general manager of the GE90 Program at GE Aviation. "The GE90 team is excited to hit the 20 million flight-hour milestone and we look forward to continuing to provide our customers with outstanding support to keep them flying for years to come." 

The GE90 engine has a strong backlog of more than 560 GE engines on order. The engine production rate has grown from 20 engines per year in 1995 to 160 engines per year in 2010. 

The majority of the 1,100 engines in service are GE90-115Bs, which power the Boeing 777-300ER, -200LR and 777 Freighter aircraft. At 115,000 pounds of thrust, the GE90-115B engine combines advanced technologies from the GE90 family with new, performance-enhancing features, such as a three-dimensional aerodynamic (3-D aero) compressor and wide-chord, swept composite fan blades for greater efficiency. The dual annular combustor emits no more than 40 percent of the hydrocarbons allowed by today's international standards. Since entering service in 2004, the GE90-115B engine has demonstrated superior fuel efficiency as well as proving itself as one of the quietest engines per pound of thrust. 

Derated to 110,000 pounds of thrust, the GE90-110B engine powered the Boeing 777-200LR to a world record in 2005 for distance traveled nonstop by a commercial jetliner east from Hong Kong to London. The same engine also powers the world's largest, longest-range twin-engine freighter, the Boeing 777 Freighter, which offers lower operating costs and more capacity than any other twin-engine freighter. 

Snecma of France, Avio SpA of Italy, and IHI Corporation of Japan are revenue-sharing participants in the GE90 program.
